About Waco Children’s Museum the Mayborn Museum

In 2004, Baylor University opened the Sue & Frank Mayborn Natural Science and Cultural History Museum Complex. However, the museum’s collection began long ago. Baylor University professors began collecting teaching materials in the 1850s to help students learn biology, physics, chemistry, and geology. Until 1886, Baylor’s campus in Independence, Washington County, was a center of educational activity in frontier Texas. The school then moved to Waco and continued its excellence. This early period saw the need for a storehouse of knowledge and physical objects from which to learn. Which brought the Mayborn Museum to us! Their mission is to engage the community and inspire life-long learning through their rich collections, vibrant programs, and hands-on experiences. Mayborn Museum’s vision statement is to serve the community with distinction by providing greater creative opportunities for all to learn and grow.

Museum studies are also available to students pursuing graduate and undergraduate degrees in other fields at Baylor. Students can learn about the history and philosophy of different types of museums and the skills needed in museum administration. Additionally, they will study museum education, collections management and care, archival management, and exhibit design. On top of all that, courses on material culture, decorative arts, historic preservation, and museum ethics will be taught.

The learning process often involves field trips to major museums in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio, among others. Students apply classroom learning to museum operations by participating in all aspects of the museum’s daily operations. The Mayborn Museum also features special exhibits and events like The Dust Bowl, the DC Super Heroes exhibit, and Christmas Lights In The Village!
